With just one word, a top Chicana author recently left Yuma’s literary circle pretty much speechless.

Ana Castillo said “yes” to an invitation for a visit to Yuma.

“Writers of Dr. Castillo’s caliber get a lot of lucrative offers for speaking engagements,” said Prof. Richard Jahna at Arizona Western College. “I wasn’t sure we had a chance of luring her to Yuma. But we asked, and she said yes. It’s very exciting.”

Castillo comes to Yuma on Monday, April 8, bringing with her a rich literary resume as an award-winning poet, novelist, editor and playwright.

“This is a special opportunity for our community to spend time with a writer who is widely recognized as one of the most important Chicana voices of her generation and who is highly respected…”

Light Installation and Reading

Charles Deering Library, Evanston, IL

The world renowned Italian artist Marco Nereo Rotelli, best known for his stunning light installations at landmarks across Europe (Petit Palais in Paris, Venice Biennale) and the Beijing Olympics, will illuminate the façade of Northwestern University’s historic Deering Library.
The façade of the historic Deering Library will be transformed into a page of luminous poetry, projecting the work of seven Chicago poets; inside the library, the featured poets will read their work, accompanied by a musical score.

Participating Chicago Poets: Ana Castillo, Reginald Gibbons, Arica Hilton, Parneshia Jones, Elise Paschen, Ed Roberson, Jennifer Scapettone, and Rachel Webster; curated by Arica Hilton.
Light installation by Marco Nereo Rotelli; Curated by Thomas Haskell Simpson; Musical and vocal actions curated by Alessandra Visconti
Castillo will be reading her poem, “A Little Prayer for the Trees,” translated into Spanish by Brenda Romero-Lake.
